sumomomomomomomomomomo

soo, what's been going on lately?

not an incredibly large amount to be honest. though i got, quite possibly, the funniest email from my dentist's office that i've seen in a long time. as you all know, my dad (i still love my dad haha) has a rather big mouth and likes to brag/talk/whatever. usually i think to draw attention to him (which i notice i do as well :[) but for the most part, my dad is infinitely better than i am at it.

for example.

he walks into the dentist's office recently, and, yells to everyone `my son is looking for a girl friend!!!`

for the record, i have not, nor will ever, announce something like that to my dad... so my blame lies somewhere bewteen my family, friends, and oscar, the cat.

needless to say, this got a rather impressive reaction. within (i presume) minutes i receive an email from my dental office with a rather peculiar announcement:

`We found the girl for you to marry and make your Mom and Dad very proud`

uh... huh. at first i thought, well hey, maybe there was this nice girl that came to get her teeth cleaned. coincidentally her father was with her as well and they started talking about how she's searching for this awesome-tall-asian-who-might-possibly-be-living-in-japan-but-will-come-home-soon kind of guy. hey, it could happen.

then i snapped back to reality and realized... i don't really talk about girls i like with my dentist...

and that's when i scrolled down the email and found this

yeaop. i have, no, comment.

but ok let's me honest, why is someone who lives in macau posting in `japancupid?` :P

alright, besides that, the title of this post is in reference to what i did last saturday with susie. we made our way to tokyo to watch the (there are many apparently) sumo tournaments. we also spent part of the day in asakusa (again for me, well her too), tokyo, and shinjuku. anyways, we get in, and it's a lot like, well sumo is a lot like a bunch of fat guys in loin cloths and salt.

don't get me wrong, very cultural, very respected in japan. i mean shit, we have wrestling ;P tight leather undies, or loin cloths and salt? i'd prefer neither to be honest.

to make it even better, i decided that a beer would be nice, and susie agreed. however, i downed it rather fast, and ended up passing out for about half an hour of the 90 minutes we were there... it was heaps fun though heh.

did i mention i paid about fifty bucks for a 30 minute nap and 60 minutes of fat guys in loincloths slapping each other and throwing salt?

go me!

mmmm

so i finished:

1. when we were orphans.
2. south of the border, west of the sun.
3. hardboiled wonderland and the end of the world.

and for the most part, they were good reads. but now i have no books to read, so train rides are rather boring... but i did do something i never thought i'd do.

i bought an iPod nano. white, 2gb. not sure if many of you know, but my sandisk (damn it mike!) died on me in february (which spurred the reading) and i've been procrastinating long enough to not buy the ipod just cause i didn't want to conform. but, i figured i have a powerbook, and winamp tags are lame, and they had a sale on golden week where they dropped the price by about 20 bucks, i thought sure, why not?. 175 dollars later, i am the proud owner of an ipod nano. and then as i wasn't paying attention, the clerk drops it on the floor. awesome eh?

i still haven't opened it yet though.

not much has really been going on in my life; school's been keeping me pretty busy. some fun quotes that probably won't make sense to you guys, but for my own amusement would be:

`and then there's a big fat bush,` from susie, and
`i like you, you're a lot like me. except not an ass hole,` care of scott drunk hehe.

we celebrated brad's birthday awhiles back ago (4/29) which was good times, i have pics, but just haven't put them up. this will inevitably lead me to do something else i thought i'd never do.

upgrade my flickr account to pro for unlimited uploads, and a few other minor goodies.

nothing incredibly major, but just these little developments in my life. so let's see... school's going well. my new kids are really great - minus the one i threw a pen cap at, for good reason might i add you - and i swear it was just a light throw to get her attention... anyways, i find that sometimes lessons are a bit draining on the energy levels and when i get home i just want to cook dinner (or order pizza :D) and play games till i pass out. for the most part it feels like weekends aren't long enough, and though try as i might, you can't belp but notice that the first year is almost over, with a little more than 2 months to go.

where has all the time gone?

and though i did say that i wanted to come home in august, it looks like even that might be rather difficult to some extent. i have to teach till the end of july (roughly) and the new jets come in around august time (and i'd like to help them out) in addition we start classes again in september (fun times). if anything i might come back home in december, but to be honest, a trip to taiwan (again) would be nice i think. not too sure what's going on.

some thoughts on the horizon. this saturday i'm off to tokyo to go watch some sumo wrestling with susie (we're in japan right?) and the weekend after, sato sensei (she sounds like a flower), was engaged last march or so and getting married. and i have an invitation for her wedding reception saturday the 27th. brad, ryan, and i are also planning to stay in a japanese style in sometim in may/june, and possibly a trip to kyoto/osaka/nara/hiroshima in july (it'll be hot... and humid... and sweltering... did i mention humid?).

oh yeah and i'm going to meet itou sensei (my ucsd japanese teacher) in nagoya this june :)

i sometimes wonder how much i've changed. i've noticed whenever i leave japan, i still find myself doing all the japanese manuerisms; the bowing, the excessive politeness, and even speaking in japanese. it's somewhat scary. i wonder how much of myself i'll actually have retained at the end of another year, and how much of my self has changed for the better/worse and what you guys will think of me when you see me again.

i think i'm still the same guy ; )

and on some random notes, qq has filled my mind again (and i think only a few people will get that), i've started writing some random stream of consciousnesses, and i guess to address a question some of you are wondering:

how's japan?
japan is good, if some things changed, it'd be even better.

am i having fun?
absolutely.

sooooo

what's been happening you guys? i woke up this morning and thought to myself what the hell would i do if an earthquake struck here? i mean everything in japan is made of ricepaper in concrete, doubt anything could really save me from being crushed :P.

so then i asked one of my jte's...

me: so what should i do? there's nothing to duck under at home.
fukushima sensei: well you can um...
m: /waits.
f: well, hmmm...
m: /waits.
f: just do as we japanese do.
m: and that is?
f: scream.
m: ...

awesome.

so as you also might not know, we just finished what the japanese call `golden week.` what is golden week? it's where a string of emperor's had their birthdays and, thus, they translate into days off for the rest of japan. this also happens to coincide with the busiest, and most expensive, traveling season in japan.

but at least (for this year) it's 3 days off in the week plus a weekend.

ryan, kristy, and i headed off to kamakura (pics up soon) where we got to see the various temples, and, shock, no conbinis! not to mention the world's largest buddha and some other tranquil scenes - like the temple that has a paved parkinglot. makes me wonder if the entrance fees really go towards upkeep... hey why's there a new whirpool for the monks....?

afterwards, ryand and i soloed to tokyo where we headed for shibuya. originally we wanted to go to nikko, but train times, and the lack of a plan lead us to settle for a trip to tokyo. don't get me wrong, it was still fun as hell. we grabbed dinner at this all-you-can-eat indian restaurant, where it wasn't bad, but what can you expect with all-you-can-eat in tokyo?

after a bit of a frustrating search, we secured our lodgings at one of those infamous capsule hotels. to appease our concerns, we noticed that the outside of it was covered in marble.

any hotel that's covered in marble has to be good... right?

...right?

we also got to see the world's most profitable starbucks, that also overlooks the world's busiest intersection (shibuya). that was pretty cool. we also visited ueno park, ameyo market, asakusa, and shinjuku as well. all in all, it was good times.

even though we had a long weekend, it never feels like it's enough. as my friend says:

averagesmartguy: i need a vacation from golden week :/.

amen.
